Sarasota Catholic Charities Ball Big Success

Elegant evening provides perfect setting to support important programs

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Venice is out in front while dealing with the ongoing economic crisis that has hit every person.

Because of this, the need to support the programs of Catholic Charities has never been great. With the current economic situation in mind it was decided that the annual Sarasota Ball, benefitting programs in Sarasota and Manatee counties would be a simpler, but more elegant affair than in years past.

The 21st Annual Sarasota Ball, with a theme of “An Evening in America: Home is where Our Heart is…,” did not include any silent auction items but instead had pledge cards where people were open to donate as much as they wanted to Catholic Charities without the fan-fair of an auction.

The only item up for auction this year was the traditional dinner with Bishop Frank J. Dewane. That item went to four top-bidders who each donated $10,000 for the opportunity to spend time with the Bishop and to give to a worthy cause.

Bishop Dewane lauded the work of Catholic Charities and the dedication it has to serving the many in the area who are suffering.

“This is where the help begins,” Bishop Dewane said of the Ball. “Your support tonight will make a tremendous difference in the lives of so many people.”

Dr. Tam Sicard, District 1 Director for Catholic Charities, said the program was very blessed to have experienced the generous support of the community.

“We are honored to continue the good work of providing help, creating hope and serving all,” Sicard said. “Because of the dedication and financial support received by our sponsors, by those in attendance and from those who couldn't come but sent in donations, thousands of people in our local community will be served. We are grateful."

The evening included food, lots of dancing and performances by the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe, the Mainstream Band, and a special performance by Sharon DeVeto of Cardinal Mooney High School.
